The men’s golf team, coming off April’s inaugural Great West Conference Championship, and the women’s team, which came in second place in the competition, are showing improvement this spring.

The men will not be given a chance to repeat as Great West Conference Champions, because all of the men’s teams in the conference have joined the America Sky Conference. The tougher conference means that the men will have to step up their play in 2009-2010, which was not the case in the beginning.

The men tied for 15th of 19 in the UTA Waterchase Invitational Sept. 21-22 and they finished 12th out of 12 at the Oral Roberts Shootout Sept. 28-29.

The women’s team will still be in the Great West Conference and is looking to win its first conference title. But just like the men, they struggled out of the gate.

The women finished 13th of 13 in the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational Sept. 28-29 and fifth out of eight at the Sam Houston Elkins Lake Invitational Oct. 12-13. The men did not improve to the degree the women did, but they looked much better after September.

The men finished fourth at Sam Houston Elkins Lake Invitational and second at the UTPA Golf Classic Nov. 2-3. The women finished second at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate Tournament Oct. 19-20 and first overall at the UTPA Golf Classic.

In 2010, the men have already jumped to a strong start. They went against the University of Houston and the University of Arkansas in the Redstone Challenge at Redstone Golf Club on Feb 6.

The Huskies had a great showing, finishing only seven strokes behind UH and nine strokes behind Arkansas, which is one of the top teams in the nation.

Like he has all season long, sophomore Sumin Yu led the Huskies with a fourth-place finish and a score of 73 overall, only one stroke out of second place. The team also had strong showings from sophomore Andrew Rollins and freshman Hudson Hansard, who both finished seventh with a 76.

The men will be looking to continue their improved play at the Rice Intercollegiate Tournament Feb. 15-16. The inaugural Great West Conference Champions will look to be the inaugural America Sky Conference Champions Apr. 26-27.

The women, who are still in the Great West Conference, are looking to have a strong showing and transfer their successful finish from 2009 to Kinder, La. for the McNeese Cowgirl Classic Feb. 15-16.
