Roses, chocolates, gifts and love are a few things that represent the upcoming holiday—St. Valentine’s Day.

We celebrate Valentine’s Day in honor of St. Valentine who was martyred in 269 A.D. for refusing to denounce Christianity. Everyone shows and receives love differently, but spreading love is how we can keep the meaning of Valentine’s Day alive.

I think Valentine’s Day is a day to receive and embrace love while remembering God’s love for us is unconditional. This is a special time to celebrate new friendships and a time to spend with loved ones.

Some say that it’s a day that reminds them that if they are single they are alone and if they are in a relationship that special someone may feel obligated to buy a gift.

A person’s relationship status should not decrease the joy of this holiday because there is more to Valentine’s Day than being in a relationship.

Showing love does not have to be expensive—show it the way God shows us.  Sometimes spending time with a loved one means more than just buying a gift.

Saying  “I love you” or simply complimenting a loved one can make a difference. Even helping out with daily tasks can show them that they are appreciated.

Valentine’s Day is not about receiving gifts, nor is it a holiday to ignore. It can be a day to spread the love of God to many and a time to remember to put others first.

Some people think Valentine’s Day is just another day, and it is a marketing ploy to get money.

There are those who feel it is a holiday that is overrated and overplayed, but Christ is the reason that I know how to love and show appreciation for my loved ones.

I like to view it as a day the Lord made to help us realize how important it is to love others. The ability to love others is a God-given gift.

Jesus commanded us to love others. 1  John 4:7 states, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”

Others can see God through us when we show love to friends, and even strangers, the same love that God shows us.

I plan on enjoying Valentine’s Day by spending it with my family and friends to celebrate St. Valentine’s sacrifice and show God’s unfailing love to others.
