The theater in the Morris Cultural Arts Center now has a name
What was previously known as the University Theater, now bears the name of Linda and Archie Dunham, who recently donated $1.25 million to the University's Dunham Bible Museum. Another $1 million donation was made in the name of the Dunham family by ConocoPhillips in 2004 upon Archie Dunham's retirement from the position of CEO.
President Robert B. Sloan Jr. said the Dunham family has made a significant impact on the life of the University and in the surrounding community, an impact which he described as being inspirational.
"It inspires us to see the generosity of others," Sloan said.
The Dunham's said they are honored that the University has named the theater after them. "It is a humbling experience to have it named after us," Archie Dunham said.
The Dunham's said they are pleased that the University hosted the Madeleine Albright Lecture in the theater, and hope that events that are currently being held in Downtown Houston will be hosted at HBU in the future.
"It is the most beautiful theater in Houston," Archie Dunham said.
Sloan share the Dunham's hope that future events will bring attention to the University.
Being the only only professional theater in southwest Houston, The Linda and Archie Dunham Theater has already been used for graduations, musical performances, dance recitals, and larger performances such as by the Houston Chamber Choir and the Greater Houston Youth Orchestra.
The theater, which seats 1,200, will host several events this semester, including the Houston Civic Symphony which will perform with the University's Choral Union in the Dunham Theater this March.
