The men's golf team played against the toughest competition it has seen all year and finished 11th out of 15 at the Rice Intercollegiate Feb. 16-17.
The team shot a total score of 307 in the first round and was in 12th place going into the second day of competition.
The Huskies improved as the tournament progressed, shooting 304 in the second round and 292 in the third.
Head coach David Shuster said he was satisfied with the team's performance.
"I think this was the best performance of the year," Shuster said. "Out of the other 14 teams, we beat 11 in the final round and tied one."
The only teams placing higher than the Huskies in the final round were Pacific University, which won the tournament, and Rice University, which hosted.
Shuster also stressed the fact that the University's golf program, made up of five freshmen and one sophomore, is only six months old and is competing against teams that have been together for years.
Freshman Sumin Yu continued his success by finishing 13th out of 75 in the individual standings.
"Sumin has proven to be the most consistent player all year," Shuster said.
Even with Shuster's praise, Yu said he believes he underperformed.
"I could have done better," Yu said. "On the last two holes, I shot 3-over par. If I would have made par, I could have finished in sixth or eighth place."
Another athlete Shuster praised is freshman Ian Armstrong, who shot a team-best 70 on the final day. Armstrong said the key to his success was getting comfortable on the golf course.
"I finally got putts to go in," Armstrong said.
Armstrong's improvement began in the final round after he birdied the second hole, the same hole he bogeyed at the start of the tournament.
Yu said the team is working toward meeting its goals for this season.
"We are still improving and trying to get there," Yu said.
Armstrong said finishing strong in the final round and staying focused will be key to the team's success in the future.
"We cannot have anymore rounds where we go two steps forward and then one step back," Armstrong said.
